The Conservatives are to set up a new committee into the Government's handling of asylum seekers.

The new panel will investigate the matter of whether refugees should be sent home early and when, the MP for Ottawa-Vanier has told CBC News.

"The question of being prepared to accept refugees at some point in the near future, given that we've been in office for less than six months, I think that's going to be a discussion for the new government as well," he said.

The MP said the process of resettling Syrian refugees has created more problems than it has solved.

"And yet to come forward, to accept more refugees in a timely manner and to ensure that there are fewer refugees is going to be of enormous benefit in Canada to this country," he said.

He also argued the Liberal Party was trying to get ahead of the curve.

"I'm sure that [Immigration Minister] Ahmed Hussen and others would like to see this process improved. But that is not in their interest, and unfortunately it's not in the interest of Canada as a whole. And certainly, if we don't want to be prepared to provide that, we must be able to put forward a plan that is a lot more efficient and practical and appropriate to the future needs of Canada."

On Monday Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there will be no new refugee resettlement quotas in Canada until the Senate gets the Liberal Party's approval.

The Trudeau government last October announced the mandatory quota for refugee resettlement in Canada, calling it "the only sensible way of dealing with the situation," when he was appointed. It was later extended through 2017.
